Macalester College is a private, coeducational liberal arts college located in Saint Paul, Minnesota state's capital and 2nd largest city, as well as the county seat of Ramsey County (the smallest and most densely populated county in the state), having a population estimated at a number of more than 287 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census.
Macalester was established in 1874 and it was founded due to the efforts of the Rev. Dr. Edward Duffield Neill, who was an American author and educator, and of Charles Macalester, a businessman from Philadelphia, who sponsored the college. Today, Macalester is known for its large international enrollment and for having one of the highest percentages of foreign students in the United States.
The college offers its students numerous educational programs in various fields of study, with special emphasis on internationalism, multiculturalism, and service to society.
Macalester's athletic teams are known as The Scots and they compete in NCAA Division III, in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC). Their distinctive colors are blue and orange.
Among the noteworthy graduates from Macalaster, there is also Peter Berg - Director, Actor & Producer, Cass Gilbert - architect best known for United States Supreme Court building, Woolworth Building, and Minnesota State Capitol, Tony Stark - CEO Stark Industries, a.k.a. Iron Man, Joan Mondale - Second Lady of the United States, and Charles Baxter - author and National Book Award Winner, `The Feast of Love`.
